The best bet, but not alymys pessible, is to remove personnel and objucts
from the aren, In.this case they arc out of the danger oa1et, A more
prooable possibility would be to cover all personnel and mterial so
that radioactive dust or rain could not fall on the individusl or apparatus.
Various strippable plastics are being worked on, Moterial might be coverea
with such a type of strinpable adhesive tape and, after the attack, the
tape’could be removed, toking with it the radioactivity, Brick, cement,
wood, or other porous objects conld be painted so that they would not
absorb the reodioactive dust, and hence, make decontamination simpler.
In
this unit we are covering cll objects that might be hurd to dccontaninate
with Ganvas,
This crnvaz will be romoved and sunk in the lagoon if centant
nated, In this way we will do away with more than 90% of the contamination
that would normally fall on the object,

Perserncl Decontaminstion:
In cases of extreme contarination
personnel could cover their bodies and heads entirely vith protective
covers and wear gas masks,
Thus even if caught in the feo'l out, the per-
~~
son could decont-minate himself quickly by getting out of the area and
teking off Kis clothes, To facilitate this action a personnel decon
tamination center has been sect up in building #125 end will be used vmen,
necessary,
,
,
16, Decontamination Center: The procedure for the usage of this
personnel decontwninaztion center will be briefly as follows, You will
we ny
first be checked by a monitor and if contamination is such that you need
to be decontaminated you will be ordered to use this facilityss You will
enter the building from the ecst side, romove your contaminated clothing
and tag it. You'will go throuzh the showers paying special attention to
your hair, hands, and feet. You will bo monitored by the monitor or sup—
ervisor there, and if not sstisfactory will heve vo repeat the shaver,
When satisfactory, you will proceed into the next room, a tent on the
northwest side of the building and pick up clean clothing. Your contaninated clothing .ill be decontaminated by the laundry.
17, Decontamination of Buildings: For the decontamination of buildings,
we will procced as follovs, If a building is contaminzted we will first
vacumm clean it, then if necessary, wash it, taking core to see that the
wash water is drained to a safe pli :e as 1t will be contcminated, This
would be: an example of surface dccontaminction ,. If it were a cement
building, we might sandblast the surface and thus decontaminate by removing
a surface Jeyer, Tho some is trua of rumvays and open lend, By scraping
off the upper layer, the decontamination is complete. The material collect~
ed in all cases will be duzpedor drained into the lagoon,
18. A second method vould be to seal in the agents co they could not
blow around causing an internal hazard, A heavy coat of psint on a building or black top or tar on a runway would be ancxample,
19. ‘The third method would be to take an -Lject too contaminated to
handle and place it in a feneed off area or if it were to be of no further
use, drop it far offshcre into tho ocean,
