10. DESCRIPTION OF RECORDS
This series documents the administrative work of Dr. Edward L. Alpen as both Director of the Donner Laboratory, and Directorof
the Biology and Medicine Division. Inciuded is documentation of Aipen’s involvement in various professional activities and
committees, and his participation in numerous professional conferences. Also represented are legal proceedings involving Dr.
Alpen (Goodmanvs. Regents, UC Nuclear Weapons Lab Conversion Project vs. Regents) and a chronicling of Dr. J.A. Linfoot’s
dismissal for insubordination. Records consist of correspondence, group progress reports, project proposals, drafts, papers,
manuscript reviews, travel vouchers and arrangements, space planning, and requests for funding. Also present are
correspondenceand travel records for Dr. Thomas L. Hayesin his capacity as Acting Division Head of the Biology and Medicine
Division, and Acting Director of the Donner Laboratory. Arrangement is loosely alphabetical for correspondence, though
sometimes by year. Travel records are arranged by conference attended. Project proposals are by year. The series is also
referred to simply as “Biology and Medicine Division. R & D Administrative Files.”

12. INFORMATIONAL ANALYSIS
Committee membersare often listed by name,institution, title and address. Included is one piece of correspondence having to
do with improper access to AVM patients for NMR studies. This lists patients by number. There are thorough descriptions of
proposedprojects in the Director's Fund files. Some records indicate that Alpen had knowledge of experimental work with
radioactive elements. Included is a request to compile a list of experts to represent the Federal Governmentin the “Down
winders” suit filed by cancer patients in Arizona and Utah. There is also background information on responses of different
species to total body irradiation, and the value of LD50 in man.
