The Commission approved conducting a UN observer program during
operation Hardtack to demonstrate the US clean weapons capability
and requested a detailed program be submitted for their consideration.
The Chairman reported ona letter received by the White House from
Linus Pauling which requested an appointment with President Eisenhower
to discuss the cessation of nuclear weapons tests.
Strauss cid not feel
that such an appointment should be allowed and the Commissioners
discussed the matter with some expressing their views that the request
for an appointment could not be ignored and that perhaps it should be
given to Dr. Killian to handle.
