President Eisenhower expressed the hope that Millrace could be accelerated in order to begin before the conclusion of Hardtack, and Strauss had pointed out the additional cost and time factor but had requested Starbird to initiate necessary action to accelerate that series. Meeting #1385, 25 June 1958: The Commission approved the appointment of Al Luedecke as AEC General Manager upon his retirement from the Air Force following Hardtack and, inthe interim, appointed Paul Foster to succeed Fields as General Manager until Luedecke assumes the duties.
