Project 5.4 - In-Tlight Participation of a P-S7B - Lt Harold M. Wells Jr
ORITOTIVE
The ctjective of this project is to measure the effects of a
nuclear detonation on an in-flight B-57 aircraft.
Recorded data will
be used to verify or correct the P-57 Weapons Delivery Handbook.
In
addition, the preject will provide basic research data for design
criteria cf future USAF aircraft,
INSTRUM™TPA TION
Out of 220 channels being recorded, & data channels were lost for
various reasons.
They have been repaired, or replaced by spares.
Instrumentation consisted of strain gages, thermocouples, calorime.crs, radicmeters, pressure gages, and various other tranducers.
It
was planne? to position the B57 in a position corresponding to approx—
imately 80 ~ 25 pereent limit lea2 on the critical member of the

The JBeS7B was flying at an absolute altitude of 17,255 feet,
headirg 073° in a tail~on position at H # OC.
Forirontal range to greund
zero at H # O was 34,000 feet (aircraft traveling at 2.2 ft/sec).
Air-
craft position at time of shock arrival (H /# 79 seconds) has not been
received from Raydist,
Needing and altitude same at H # OQ.
