Extension of Danger Area Surrounding Pacific Proving Grounds
Mr, Murray asked that it be recorded in the minutes that on the
previous day, March 18, 1954, with the concurrence of Commissioner
Zuckert and Commissioner Campbell he had dispatched a letter to the
‘Secretary of the Interior requesting his concurrence in a decision to
.enlarge the danger area at the Pacific Proving Grounds, and a letter to
the Chief of Naval Operations requesting him to implement this decision.
A letter to the Secretary of State informing him of this matter had also
been transmitted, (See AEC 125/7, subsequently circulated.)
The General Manager said that the Secretary of the Interior had concurred in this decision with the understanding that if populated islands were
included in the enlarged area, immediate steps would be taken to evacuate
them,
The General Manager also said that he had discussed with the Chairman
of the Joint Committee the question of compensation for the twenty-three
members of the crew of a Japanese fishing boat apparently injured by
“all-out after the first detonation in the current series,
