Johnston Island, the U. 3. Atomic Energy Gomeission today issued public ystie:
ef a surface danger avea vbich vill beestablished around the telend effective
July 25, 1958.

On May 2, 1958, 1t was aunounced that certain short-range defmeive aisslies
with nuclearwirheads would be fired from Johnston Island, as part of the
HARDTACK series of muclear tests in the Pacific. Johnston Island 4s located
ahout 540 statute wiles southwest of the nearest inhabited island of the Hawaiian
chain and about 900 statute ailes from the next nearest inhabited island.
Bifective July 25, a1) ships are cautioned to remain clear of an area bounded
by & circleof400 nautioal mile rediue centered at the following geagraphis
coordinates:
longitude 169 31° Veat
latitude 16° 45' Korth.
it in estimated that the surface danger area vill remain in effect for a period
of approximately three or four weks. this notice is being given the uidest
possibledistribution through murine and international organisations.
An ei danger area will be estehlished by warnings to atroraft issued by the
| Givil Aevonsutice Administration shortly before the firing time planned for each
best.
This will permit maximm utilisetion of the area by normal air traffic.
