SUMMARY OF TASK UNIT ACTIVITIES
4.1 TASK UNIT 1, LASL PROGRAMS

4.1.1
Objectives
The function of TU-1 was to carry out experiments designed to measure certain properties of the LASL-designed weapons and nuclear devices;
to mecsure certain physical quantities of fundamental tmportance to weapon
design; and to study the physics underlying certain effects produced by
nuclear weapons or devices.

Techniques

The techniques used to make the measurements are described bricfly
in Chapter 2, Section 2.2, They are described in much more detail in the
pr ceoperational and technical reports of the various programs prepared at
LASL and in the preliminary reports prepared for each shot.

In general it was possible to live ashore and make repeated use of
varlous stations and facilities at Eniwetok Atoll, as originally planned. At
Bikinl it was necessary for some technical personnel to Nive on LCU’s be-
rem
cause of fallout on all islands except Enyu. Due to the excellent facilities
and support provided on these boats, this arrangement proved very satisfactory. The Bikini operation was greatly facilitated by the fact that it was
possible to keep the Enyu base camp occupied except for evacuation during
shot time,
