JNIVERSITY, OF WASHINGTON LABORATORY OF RADIATION BIOLOGY FISHERIES CENTER SEATTLE 5, WASHINGTON Pacific Proving Ground July 2, 1958 Dr. Allyn H. Seymour Marine Biologist United States Atomic Energy Commission Division of Biology and Medicine Washington 25, D. C. Dear Al: I have had several talks with Ernie Wynkoop, Joe Sanders, and Capt. Corbin of Holmes and Narver about the use of the Aloto, the LSM used for interisland work, for our Rongelap program. We are in need of arriving at the final decision soon, on the use of the vessel, the time of schedule, the number of days needed, the cost, how the cost will be financed, etc. Unfortunately, many of these questions must be referred to you for you to try to dig up the answers. From here it looks as if the period August 15 to August 25t or September 1-15 would be the best time forfus and the program; however, the Aloto must be engaged in roll-up about this time, if the schedule is delayed further. The local group are happy to help us and if the financing of the operation can be worked out, I am sure we can get the job done from here. Can you wire the budget level to me as. soon as it is set? I had word from the Lab that this week should be the one for the decision. We have some gigantic problems out here to evaluate in the next few months -- and years. The problems grow in scope and complexity with each operation and we seem to have bigger and bigger chunks of them. Best wishes. ot Hauer e LRD:me (sent to Lab for typing) Lauren R.
