samples were successfully analyzed. The mean activity for the 47
samples which were not positive for {sup 239}Pu did not differ
significantly from the mean for our control samples, which consisted of
urines collected from six young adult Utah residents. 2 figs.) 12 tabs.

Abstract: This annual report presents the activities of the National
Institute of Radiological Sciences in Japan in the fiscal year 1988.
The activities are divided into research, technical aids, training,
medical services, management, library or editing, and international
cooperation. Research activities are described under the following
sections: (I) newly started special researches for ‘biological risk
evaluation in public exposure’ and ’exposure assessment in the
environment and the public involved in food chain’, and the continuing
special research for ‘medical use of accelerated heavy ions’; (II) five
assigned researches;

(III)

ordinary researches

concerning physics,

pharmachochemistry, biology, genetics, pathology and physiology, cell
biology, internal exposure, environmental science, clinical research,
clinical research for radiation injuries, medical use of heavy
particles, environmental radiation ecology, and aquatic radiation
(IV)

risk estimation of radiation;

(V)

actual

surveys

for

Bikini victims, population doses of medical and occupational exposure,
and thorotrast exposure; (VI) project research; (VII) radioactivity
survey; (VIII) research supported by Science and Technology Agency

aids. Appendices include the personnel list and the bibliography of
articles reported by the staff.
