Gates, Manager U. S. Atomic Energy Commission Nevada Operations Office P, O,. Box 14100 Las Vegas, Nevada 89114 Dear Mr. Gates: In response to your letter of August 25, I suggest that Dr. Walter E. Nervik, head of the LLL Radiochemistry Division, be Technical Director for the Eniwetok effort. It is apparent that this program will be especially complex because of the likelihood of scrutiny by a broad spectrum of the scientific and international political communities. I think it particularly important, therefore, that it not be undertaken until there is a definition of the program scope and priority by the appropriate Washington officials. In addition, there should be a clear delineation of respornsibility and there should be assurance of sufficient funding so that the quality of the effort is not likely to be compromised, Sincerely, Gog Batsel Roger E.
