essential to the CASTLE tests and allowed greater flexibility in the
operation.

Neither change would have been possible with land shots.
However, an
attempt to fire from a barge on the high seas was deemed wumwise until
the problems of tsumanis (great sea waves produced by submarine earth
movements or volcanic eruptions) are settled and other operational
problems carefully studied.
