Reynolds Business Manager Radiation Laboratory University of California Berkeley, California Subject: MONITORING PROGRAM Dear Mr. Reynolds: During the past series of nuclear tests at the Pacific Proving Ground and the Nevada Test Site, the radiological measurements made by the University of California Radiation Laboratory have been of great assistance in the fallout monitoring program, With the announced tests in the Pacific this spring, the Division of Biology and Medicine has again requested UCRL participation in this monitoring program. It is planned that about 11 AEC installations, 42 State and Federal Public Health 4 stations and some 100 Weather Bureau points will be making collections, Return to UCRL 149 Bidg. 50 Specifically, the desired measurements are gamma dose rates at three feet above the ground and air concentrations. Any other data,such as rain water concentrations, would be useful. The measurements would start about the first of April and continue for two weeks after the end of the test series is announced, The Division of Biology and Medicine would like to receive reports made by teletype or telegram when it would seem advisable. Otherwise, the routine information could be transmitted by mail to the Director, Division of Biology and Medicine, USAEC, Washington 25, D. C. Also, Mr. R. L. Southwick, Assistant to the Manager for Public Information, SAN, should be notified of unusual increases above background. If it is possible program, will you home address, and who will serve as for UCRL to participate in this monitoring please furnish me with the name, business and telephone number of the individual and alternate contacts.
