MEMORANDUM FOR MR, WALT ROSTOW
SUBJECT: DOD Funding of Cleanup of Bikini Atoll
In response to your memorandum of January 7, 1969, Iam pleased to
advise that the Department of Defense will join with the Atomic Energy
Commission in beginning the cleanup of Bikini Atoll.
I expect that work will commence in the final quarter of this fiscal
year. The Department of Defense will provide $300,000 for this
purpose from the FY 1969 Defense Department Contingency Fund, to
be matched by a like amount from the Atomic Energy Commission.
Jt is my understanding that the Department of Interior is requesting
an appropriation from Congress for the balance of funds needed to
_complete the cleanup in FY 1970.
