MEMORANDUM FOR THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS
. Subject:
Danger Area in the Vicinity of Eniwetok Atoll
On December 2, 19147 the United States Government notified
- the Security Council of the United Nations that effective December 1,
1947 Eniwetok Atoll and its territorial waters were closed. The action
was taken by the State Department upon the request of the Atomic Enerey
Commission,
The State Department, again acting upon the request of the
Atomic Energy Commission, is notifying all foreign governments that, as a
consequence of tests of military weapons, grave hazards will exist in the
198.described below, after January 31 and throughout the calendar year

The Atomic Energy Commission is taking action to make a public
release to the effect that a danger area exists in the area described below.
Action is also being taken with the Air Coordinating Committee to notify
ali national and foreign agencies engaged in air operations,
The Comnander,
Joint Task Force Seven is taking action to notify all major commands in the
Pacific, Alaska and Far Easte
It is requested that action be taken to warn all naval
chant shipping through an appropriate
notice to mariners,

Effective date. of establishment of the danger zone is January 31
1948 and will continue through the calendar year 1918.
The area affected is described as. follows:
"Beginning with a point at 10° - 15' North latitude
and 160° ~35' East longitude, north along the meridian
‘of 160° - 35' East Longitude to a point at 12° - 45!
North latitude, 160° - 35! East longitude thence East
alongthe parallel of 12° ~ 45' North latitude to a point
at 12° ~ 45' North latitude and 163° -ooo East longitude,
