SPECIFICATIONS FOR TOTAL
BETA ACTIVITY MEASURENENTS
Determination of mixed fission products (total beta activity
in samples of soil, water, vegetation and bone) = the following requirements are suggested:

Analyses to te made on dried aliquots of soluticns
prepared fromthe above samples by ashing or other
suitable treatment. The weight of sample in the
aliquot may: be selected by the analyst to give
suitable activity.

The original! sample dissclved should be a minimm
of 10 grams of ash or other solid, or the complete
sanple.

<A correction should be made for self-absorption by
standard techniques but a self-absorption curve on
each sample is not required.

The beta activity shovld be determined by standardization against the K-l0 in natural potassium salts,
the standard also being corrected for self-absorption. :

No chemical separations are required and any natural
activity may be included as part of the tetal beta
activity.
