One aspect of this phenomenon may be related to rapidity of cell proliferation (generation cycle) in a particulartissue, i.e., with more rapidly proliferating cells of the bone marrow, leukemia occurs relatively soon after irradiation, while malignantlesions of the skin would not become manifest until later in this more slowly proliferating tissue. In the Marshallese the high incidence of adenomatoid goiter in the morerapidly proliferating thyroid glandsof the children may possibly represent premature appearance of lesions which are knownto occur later in life and thus in a sense represent an aging process. On the other hand, thefactthat no tumors (except benign nevi) have been notedin the heavilyirradiated skin of these people might indicate a longer induction period dueto slowerceil turnoverof the skin. In considering future aging studies in the Marshallese it is hoped that moresensitivetests of vigor and organ function suitabie to the conditions of study may be used. However, it must be borne in mind that such subtle aging effects may not become detectable by ordinary clinical means
