Dear Mr. Hills:
The chances of getting a field trip ship to take me to
Utrik seem rather remote at present. The only immediate solution to the
problem is to charter a small boat to take me there. I have been told
DeBrum's vessel "Louise" is available and may be chartered for $500
for the time I need her, Bill Streenan told me our funds were low, and
before I contact DeBrum I want to know whether I have the money and the
authority to rent the boat from hin,

Thanks for your letter of Dec,, 22,
As time time goes by it becomes apparent that my problem
will not be lack of cooperation from the people but to get to the islands,
After the tragedy of ©
death 1 doubt that the politicians will want
to interfere with our work for a while. I have written Dr. Conard about the
alternatives I see for solving the transportation problem; for your information
I send you a copy of the letter. If you have other suggestions, I shall lend
you an attentive ear.
Best wishes for the new year.
/Pincerely yours
