Dr. Hempelmann, whose chief area of expertise also

involves the effects of radiation in humans,

received his M.D.

in 1938 from Washington University in St. Louis.
From 1943 to
1948 he was the leader of the Health Division at Los Alamos,
and he has been at the University of Rochester since 1950.
He is currently Professor of Experimental Radiology and was
Chairman of the Radiation Department from 1960 through 1971.
