Reference la presents basic information relative to the radic- logical hazards introduced into the Pacific Area as a result of Oreration IVY. Reference lb involved a discussion on behalf of the cognizant technical section of this neadcuarters relative to the desirability and need on Operction CASTLE for atomic cloud tracking outside the imiediate danger area, sampling of drinkint water on distant atolls and evacuation of native populations. 3. 4s a result of the discussions indicated in reference 1b and relying on the substantial radiological locumentation of reference la, tnis neadauarters does not vlan to mount srvecial efforts in suvport of the apove listed safety measures during G.eration CASTLE. It arpears that it would be unrealistic to assume health hazards of a magnitude conjactured or anticipated during the planning for Operation IVY. In addition, economy of forces and equinment, esvecially in view of the recent reductions in fisca year 1954 service budgets, dictate a noltcy of austerity in all phases of the overation. As a consequence, all CASTLE Operations have been reduced except where positive evidence indicates a reasonable need for a major effort. BEST COPY AVAILABLE
