Box S551 - Dear Mr. Bauser: On September 8, 1972, we forwarded to you a staff report on the status of the annual medical survey of the Marshallese indicating the problems encountered by Dr. Robert A. Conard, Medical Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory, who would be returning to the Marshall Islands with a medical team to complete this year's survey in September. Dr. Conard has now returned to BNL and we expect to furnish you with a summary of his findings in the next few weeks. There is one development, however, that I believe should be brought to your attention at this time. During the recent examination, a 19-year old Marshallese male was found to have a blood abnormality. Dr. Conard brought the boy to the Medical Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory on October 1 where a diagnosis of leukemia was made. Because of the need for special facilities, the patient was transferred on October 2 to the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health where he will undergo chemotherapy. The patient was approximately one year of age at the time he was exposed to fallout resulting from the Bravo detonation. Estimated whole-body gamma exposure was 175 r and the patient suffered skin beta burns early after exposure. Approximately four years ago he was treated surgically for a benign thyroid nodule. He recovered from surgery and was apparently doing well when examined in March, 1971, the time of the previous examination. Sincerely, tSigned) R. E. Hollingsworth General Manager DOE ARCHIVES
