In August of 1947 General 1006 the Director, and

cal Jed Colonel Re, USA, of the Office of the Surgeon
General for a conference at theoffice of the AEC, and informed him that
certain atomic tests would be conducted in the future at some site to be
chosen in the Pacific area.
They stated that his name had been suggested
by Dr. Norris E. Bradbury of Los Alamos to head radiological safety
operations.
Colone] @@pwas asked if he would be willing to assume
this responsibility, and he stated he would be willing to help in any
way possible.
In the latter part of September Colonel] iii was ordered*¥oreport to Lt. General SM. for 0

it was confirmed that Colonel a willing to assume responsibility
for radiological safety operations, and that the Surgeon General had concurred in his release.
Accordingly, Lt. General QB stated that orders
would be issued making the avpointment official.
