control of airoraft by 1950.
TECHNICAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Responsibility for obtaining the photographic coverage required
by Joint Task Force SEVEN in Operation SANDSTONE was assigned by the
Joint Chiefs of Staff to the United States Air Foroe, and the Task
Force Staff Photographer was charged with supervision of this mission.
Experience gained during the operation indicates that improved scientific data can be obtained through photographic means if certain developmental work recommended in the report of the Staff Photographer
is carried on.
It is believed that the United States Air Force should
be authorized to proceed with such a development program in cooperation
with the Atomic Energy Commission.
Furthermore, it is recommended that
a study be made to determine the photographic equipment and techniques
required to obtain essential information regarding the detonation of
an atanic weapon over enemy terrain and that development of such
equipment and techniques be initiated at the earliest possible time.
SUMMARY
The critical nature of some of the discussions which appear
above should not encourage the reader to believe that any important
pasis exists for dissatisfaction with the conduct uf Operation
SANDSTONE.
The success of the operation speaks for itself.
The
general soundness of the organization of the force, the coordination
between its various elements, the harmonious relationships which
