-3- "And so we ask that you permit us to spend this week here making measurements and collecting more samples to go back to the laboratories in order that we may give you more and better advice in the future. "This is the first time that we have tried to do this kind of survey from a big ship. "And we have a lot to learn about how to do that. "Yesterday we learned that the first thing we have to know how to do is to get off the ship. "some of the things that we will do during this week will use helicopters. "For most of this work the helicopter will not land but will fly above the land. "That work we hope to start today. We hope to cover every island of the atoll with the survey from the helicopters in the air. "In some places we would like to have the helicopter land so that men can come down and do the work on the islands. "Where we cannot do that the men will come ashore in the smail boats that we used this morning. "The work on land will include collecting foods:, breadfruit, pandanus, coconut, fish. "We-will pay for those foods that we take and we would like to. discuss that with the Magistrate and work out how that will be done. "We would also like to take samples of the water that you drink and use for cooking. "And then we would like to take samples of the soil - the dirt that is around the roots of the plants. "In a few places we will want to dig some large deep holes to get samples of soil and water from down deep. ""To do that we have .a small machine - a tractor - aboard the ship that can be carried ashore by the helicopter.
