At the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, on June 12th, surgical exploration of the thyroid and upper mediastinum was carried out. No mass was found in the right lower thyroid region and it was thought that a somewhat thickened lower edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle may have been deceiving. However, a small cyst was discovered in the lower left pole of the gland which proved to be a degenerating cystic adenoma. Convalescence was quite uneventful. A summary of the hospitaliza- tion including surgical and pathological reports at Cleveland is included in her BNL record. FINAL DIAGNOS IS: Adenoma with cystic degeneration. DISCHARGE MEDICATION: On the basis of her thyroid status, thyroxin treatment is not indicated. However, a decision is pending as to whether to give thyroxin supplemental treatment in this group of islanders who received a smaller dose of radiation.
