At the Committee review of the Department of the Interior, Office of Trust Territory Budget on April 12, 1978, the Chairman, Sidney Yates, asked for a report on the Bikini situation by May 15 which has now been slipped to May 22. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the information that will be available for the May 22, 1978, Hearing. The DOI and High Commissioner will be meeting with the UN Committee on Trust Territory during the week of May 15, 1978, and it would be highly desirable to have whatever infor-~mation is available by then. It was agreed at the meeting that: 1. Bikini people now living on Bikini Island should be moved, because the current trend in the accumulation of radiation exposure will produce doses that would be expected to exceed the Federal standards. Also, the restrictions on people living on the island, i.e., not eating locally grown foods, are proving impractical. If the foods being grown on Eneu Island are found to have acceptably low radioactivity, people can be moved to live on that island without any restrictions on foods from that island. . 2. The DOL/High Commissioner fa developing a plan for moving the people, probably to Eneu Island. He is awaiting advice from DOE on a move to Eneu. 3.
