As a result of these interviews I heave arrived at the - e folloving possible conclusions as to the nature of the radiation burns a 5 EP supposedly sustained by these personnels eens There are two main possible sources of radiation which could a Oa . have effected the hands of these parsonnel, First, and most ixportant, is that from the gunk which vas on the filter unite and which got on to the gloves of the personnel when theylifted the filter units off the fork of the carrier truck. ~ Ware vary conscious of this gunk because it was dark, grimy and ameary. It showed up very well on their vhite cotton gloves. They were informed by a monitor that it was hot as measured by gamma radiation. a units. Proximity to the filter pspera does not present a strong source of radiation which would bombard akin surfaces consistently. It therefore seens that thie second possibility is not the major source of radiation ae = involved wless active material transferred from the filter to the glove. The first possibility accomts for asveral things, perhaps the most in- portant of which is the fact that the left hands of these psople ahow the 4} TEaySSSR onreae most radietion effects. Since these are right-handed people, it is probable that the gunk was rubbad off, dus to active use of the right hand, while that which stayed on the left hand was able to afford a sustained source of radiation. These people did not at any tine touch TE ERE any other part of the planes, ani thereby pick up radioactive material on their gloves. for instance, points out that after working on the first drone that came in, he found it necessary to remove his left glove, that is, the cotton and rubber giove together, after which he put on only a cotton glove. He removed the first set of gloves because of a strong itching sensation, alao described a similar phenomenon. After working with three of the drones, hs changed both sets of his gloves end replaced them again with the combination of rubber and scotton gloves. * . Concerning the case of Battizahn, he reports that he wore green cotton gloves, which must have been thicker and more closely knit than the white cotton gicves worn by the other three individuals. He did not report seeing any kind of gunk on his gloves after lifting ths upper filters down to the ground. Thia may be because he couldinct see the gunk against the green background of the gloves, or elss there was nons available. Both . claimed that they desired to change their gloves after they saw the mess of black gunk on their gloves. But they changed their gloves primarily because of the itching and because were : : & rrseer The other possible source of radiation is that of proximity to the filter papers which they removed from the filter aNee : mane me ee Exhibit M | hwoas 2/17/85 PRIVACY ACTMATERIALREMOVED = peas, 4/171 SSIFICATION CANCELLED BY AUTHORITY Br DOE/OG f*. tt fis cA, Afro g 4. 2
