PPORT AGENCY, DEPARTMENT
1. & August 12, 1968, the President requested that the Chairman,
Atomic Energy Commission, and the Secretary of Deténse work witti the
Secretary of tis Interior and the High Commissioné® df the Trust Territory
in planning & comprehensive resettlement program for Bixind Atoll and
assist tld in carrying it out.

2; The Department of Defense (DOD) and the Atomic Energy Commission

(AEC) have agreed to cooperate with the Department of Interior in the
cleanup of the Bikini Atoll for ‘the return of the native population.
The
. Cleanup involves the removal of vegetative overgrovth, debris, structures
and other materials residual from the use of the Atoll for atomic testing
_ which could pose radiation or accident hazards te the population or inter-,
’ ferewith their reasonable use of the Land,

The DOD will manage the cleanup, utilizing the Defense Atomic
Support Agenoy (DASA) including the Joint Task Force EIGHT (JTF=8) and

ita existing organizational relationships with the AEC and AEC contractor
support. The JCS have designated the Director, DASA to act as Project
