Retirement is a time to reflect on the past and think about the
future.
Your inspired direction of the program on study of fallout effects
on the human beings accidentally exposed on March 1, 1954 has contributed
substantially to the understanding of the effects of radiation on man and
particularly alerted mankind to the hazard of radioiodine to the human
thyroid.
This unsuspected sensitivity of the human thyroid for development
of thyroid neoplasia and hypoplasia compared to animal responses is of
great importance in planning future nuclear energy development in the world
of today and the future.
Your statesman—-like and rational behavior when thrown innocently into
the
middle of irrational environmental and political agitators has been
commendable and is in the best tradition of the academic world.
We wish you the best for the future in your personal life and hope
we can call on you as a continuing consultant to the Medical Department on
radiation effects in man and the study of the effects of fallout on the
Marshallese.
