Dear Dr. Donsldeca:
We have talked with both Mr. Sandexs and Dr. Conard about the
Rongelar ecological survey and as a consequence have the scheduls
of operations for Rongelap.
Quoting from the THK sent by Mr. Sanders, “Construction rad-sefe
station ie scheduled for Dec. 12 to Jan. 6. LST-618 will be et
Rongelap during this period’.
“
Continuing, "Conard survey supported by LST-1083 scheduled tc depart Kwaj Feb. 18-20 and return Ewaj approximately Merch 12°.
Further, “AWS and red-sefe pereceme] to activate Bongelap station
leave Eniwetok om LST-664 at 2060, March $, and arrive Rongelap
0700, March 11. LST-664 departs Romgelep at 1300, March 12, for
Uterik and Wotho and arrive Emiwetok 6700, March 20°.
Since you are in need of living accomodations and transportation
within the lagoon at Rongelap for your ecological studies i: would
ppear’that, if available, support free Dr. Comard's party would be
good timing end aoet convenient. tequiry has been meade of Dr. Conard
about the availabilicy of support and he expressed « perecnal interest
in cooperating with you but suggested that it would be necessary to
clear through Navy channels.
Tha first atep was te talk with LCDR Gaorge A. Hamilton in the CHO
Office, Weahiagten, B.C. It was his opinion that authorization by
CHO would not be needed unless your group rode on the LST free
Kwajalein te Rongelap. Otherwise, the arrangements would be made
with Dr. Conard and che skipper of the LST. Br. Conard has written
to the akipper inquiring about two items of support: (1) living
accogodations for 4 te 6 men; (2) boat transportation within Che
lagoon.
There may be a shortage of officer space and some difficulty
in finding available boat and crew for providing cransportation within
the lagoon.
