The information collected during the nutrition survey made in
1951“ was not available until after the period of naval administration
ended. The investigation produced a pessimistic picture of food
patterns that could definitely contribute to health problems. In both
areas studied, Majuro Village of Majuro Atoll, and Udot Island of
Truk Atoll, sustenance was a combination of local food products and
imported foods, and food consumption was dependent uponseasonal
changes due to ripening of various plant food so that the nutrient
contents of diets differed at various times of the year.
To assess the adequacy of diets, the Recommended Dietary Allowances (revised 1948), prepared by the Food and Nutrition Boardof the
National Research Council (NRC), were used as standards.
The
various nutrients and the percentages below the NRC allowances obtained by each group in their food are shown in the following table:
