12 of the counts compared with the mean curve of the unexposed neutrophil counts shows that children about 12 years of age and below have more counts below than above the mean curve of the below than above the mean unexposed curve. An accumulative percentage distribution of the counts (Figure 11) shows the exposed curve still to be slightly displaced to theleft. Eosinophil and monocyte and basophil counts are about the samein the exposed as in the unexposed groups. The eosinophil counts were quite high in both exposed and comparison populations, but were about the samein the two groups. In their differential counts, 45% of the exposed and 533% of the unexposed had eosinophils of 5% or greater. unexposed children of the same age range. How- ever, above this age the distribution of counts is about the same. The mean of the lymphecyte counts shows an increase since last year’s counts of 33% in the exposed groups (Figure 9). It is this increase in lymphocytes that accounts for therise in the total white count noted above. The lymphocytes in the exposed group areat the highest point since ex- Mean platelet counts have shown furtherre- covery this year in both sexes of the exposed group compared with last year’s results (Figure 12). As posure. However, a scattergram (Figure 10) shows that more of the counts in the exposed groupare Table 3 Rongelap Group and Control Mean Blood Counts by Day and by Age WBC (10-9) Postexposure day 30 7 10 12 15 18 22 26 30 33 39 43 47 31 36 63 70 <3 Lymphocytes >5 <5 >5 90 82 64 47 1.8 2.2 5.9 6.3 3.5 39 2.1 L.7 6.5 3.8 4.9 66 6.2 7.1 3.9 65 6.7 7.2 70 74 3.7 61 76 78 65 62 5.7 35 3.2 52 3.9 58 6.7 56 70 60 7.7 60 76 Rita controls, 2 vr Rongelap controls, 3 vr Rongelap controls, 4 yr 140 98 11.2 _ — 66 81 86 69 75 9.7 76 — 89 69 80 _35 3.2 34 #43 3.0 40 3.1 3.0 20 26 26 3.5 39 _46 47 59 41 3.3 48 34 — 70 +40 40 — 45 2.6 4.1 4.7 5.0 3.9 5.3 38 3.3 2.6 3.3 35 3.5 3.6 4.0 — 4.2 48 48 3.7 34 48 5.2 — 4.4 3.4 3.6 Platelets (x 10-7) <5 _85 10.1 118 86 8.9 13.2 10.7 *Excluding pregnancy.
