Included among the subjects studied were Marshallese language, Culture, and the Education system/materials in the Marshalls. Evelyn was enrolled as a Peace Corps Volunteer on August 17, 1975. She was responsible to the Department of Education during her service in the Marshalls. Evelyn served as a classroom teacher assigned to Ronglap elementary school, where she was one of 4 faculty members. The school offered 8 grades of study and had an enrollment of approximately 60 pupils. Evelyn reported directly to the Principal of the school, Mr. Isao Eklaing, and she was responsible for teaching TESL to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades during her first year and sclence, year. math, Additionally, and TESL to the 8th grade during her second and-third she worked with her fellow teachers to improve their lesson planning and classroom presentation in all subjects, helped them develop weekly, monthly, and semester schedules for.implementing the curriculum of all subjects, and worked to build self-confidence and self-reliance in her fellow teachers. classes for 4 and 5 year olds She also taught pre-school on Saturdays mornings and became closely involved with most community activities and womens groups. Pursuant to section 5(£) of the Peace Corps Act, 22 U.S.C. paragraph 2504(f£), as amended, any former Volunteer employed by the United States Government following her Peace Corps Volunteer service is. entitled to have any period of satisfactory Peace Corps Volunteer service credited for purpose of retirement, seniority, reduction in force, leave service. and other privilege based on length of Government Ms. Craighead terminated on January 6, 1978.
