MEDICAL

1. PhysicalExamination. There is m specificrequirementfor pretest
physicalexaminationseither among militaryor civilianpersonnel
participatingin the operation. However,it will be the command
responsibilityof program directors,project leaders,and other supervisory personnelto assure themselvesthat the personnelunder their
supervisionare in good healthand physicallyable to withstandthe
stressesand strains of the operationin a tropicalenvironment. This
refers to all participatingpersonneland not just to those who may plan
to enter contaminatedareas. The military serviceshave estalikished
schedulesfor conductingannual physicalexaminationsand the personnel
movementto the forwardarea is not expectedto disruptthese schedules.
It is stronglyrecommendedthat those who have not undergonea roubine
physicalexaminationwithin one year do so well in advanceof going
overseas
2. DisqualifyingConditions. In additionto other disabilitiesdisqualifying an individualfor generalmilitaryservice,personnelwil.1not
be assigned La the forwardarea who are sufferingfrom the following
disorders: (1) peptic ulcer or confirmedtistoq thereof;(2) Chronic
eczema or fungus infection,especiallyof externalauditorycanals;
(3) Bronchialasthma or severe allergyof any kind; (4) Emotionaldisturbance (in case of nd.lJ.tary
personnel). Any significantsicknessor
disabilityor requestsfor waivers in unusualor doubtfulcases will be
referred to the Deputy Commanderfor ScientificMatters,Commander,Base
FacilitiesGroup, or CJTF SEVEN, as appropriate,who will in turn refer
them to his medical advisor.
3. Immunizations. All personneltravelingto the forwardarea are required
to possess hmmnization record indicatingthe followingimmunizations
prior to departurefrom the United States: smallpoxand typhoid-paratyphoid fever,vaccinationor revaccinationwithin three years; and
tetanus: completionof initial seriasor stimulatingdose every four
years. (Army - SR /+0-230-1:Navy- BUMED Inst 6230.1: Air Force - AFR
160-102) No requirementsexist for yellow fever,typhus, and cholera
vaccines. The InternationalCertificateof inoculationand Vaccination,
Form PHS-731 (IHR), or the militaryserviceequivalent,is recommendedfor
individualdocumentationof immunization. Each persontravelingto the
forwardarea will have this form properly filledout in his possessionwhile
not a member of a shipls company,on board a naval vessel,or otherwise
accompanyinghis health record.
4.

Access To ContaminatedAreas. The radiologicalsafety controlofficer
may, at his discretion,deny access to contaminatedareas to anY individual
if, in his opinion,there exists a doubt as to the state of the individuals
health. This refers to constructionand maintenancepersonnelas well as
scientificmilitarypersonnel.

5. PreviousExposure. It wil.lbe the comnandresponsibilityof all project
leadersand other supervisorsto assurethemselvesthat the individuals
under their chargewho will enter contaminatedareas have no historyof
over-exposurefor which unfulfilledlimitationson furtherexposurewill
be in effect during any paxt of the operationalperiod startingwith first
shot minus ‘fifteendays. Any such cases will be broughtto the attention
of CJTF SEVEN.
6. General.
a.. Newly arrived ~rsonnel are cautionedagainst over-exposureto the
sun rays.
Painful and serious sunburncan occur umder the tropicalconditionsexistingin the forwardarea. Personnelare advisedand encouraged
