It is planned thet the Department of Defense, with technical support of the Atomic Energy Commission, will conduct the clean up (make safe for human habitation) of these islands. The disposal of redioective debris end other hazardous materials, prior to the return of the islands to the Eniwetokese, will be required. The Defense Nuclear Agency is requested to initiate planning tc identity the SPORE of work and the ressources necessary for DOD to accomplish this task. Necessary coordination with the AEC, the Silitary Services ana other " povernnental agencies to gather data for this purpose is authorized. 3 . An initial interagency meeting in early August is planned to develop overall _ policy, assign administrative responsibilities, identify funding responsi| bilities and outline a gererel plan and scope of work for the various agencies | necessary for the return of the islands. It would be helpful to have your tentative proposal for accomplishing this "clean up” and an estimate of the resources needed prior to the above meeting.
