BIKINI
For your information, we have been informed by Vice Admiral L. M.
Mustin, USN, Director, DASA, that the Bikini cleanup project is
now complete. On October 8, 1969, the Trust Territory represen-

tative on Bikini indicated satisfaction with the job, and by

message of October 13, 1969, to Admiral Mustin, the AEC certified
that the radioactive scrap removal and general radiological cleanup
were satisfactorily completed. Director, DASA, will originate a
comprehensive final report documenting the AEC-DOD cleanup at
Bikini Atoli.

By letter of June 11, 1969. the Deputy High Commissioner of the

Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands requested that the AEC

review current recommendations regarding land and food use in
light of information acquired during the cleanup operation.
In
response to this request, the Division of Biology and Medicine
intends to review the relevant cleanup data and make a final
judgment on radiological safety. In addition, Dr. Robert A.
Conard of Brookhaven National Laboratory will conduct medical
surveillance of the people of Bikini as they return to their
home atoll.
