Solf-reading type operates like a gold leaf clectro-
scope with one leaf fixec end tne other movable, The movable leaf move:
across the built-in transmrsnt scale calibrated in roentgons or miliiroontgons of dosnge. In use, the dosincter is given an clectrical charg:
by means of a charging unit. The total dosage can be read at any time,
without the usc of an auxiliary instrument, by looking through one eni o2%
the dosimeter at a light source.

8, FILBADGES:
a. General; The film badge is a simple device consisting of a
photographic film cspecially sensitive to the type and intensity of ra-
diation to bs measured,
The film is enclosed in several layers of paper
and in some enses, the badye is partly covered by 2 sheet of metal, such
as lead. The paper cffectively stops light and all alpha particles, The
sheot of lead stops the beta particles. The lead shicld not only passes
gamma radiation, but greatly intensifivs the blackening of the film fron
this type of radiation beczuse .of scattering effects of the lead. This
mokcs it possible te use a single badge to determine total exposurc due
to both beta and garme radiation.
In use, the film is held in 4 small holder suitable for
clipping to clothing,
Developing the film after exposure to radiation,
shows o blackening cffect similar to that produced by light on any ordinary
photographic plate, The intensity of film blackening indicates the amour:
of radiation reeeived.
