SITUATION

The Department of Defense (00D) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)
have agreed to cooperate with the Department of Interior in the cleanup of the
Bikini Atoll for the return of the native population. The cleanup involves the
removal of vegetative overgrowth, debris, structures and other materials
residual from the use of the atoll for atomic testing which could pose radiation
or accident hazards to the population or interfere with their reasonable use of
the land. The Director, DASA, has been assigned as Project Manager for the
cleanup of Bikini Atoll. JTF~-8 has been tasked to execute the cleanup of the

atoll.

MISSION

To remove material, structures, and debris residual from nuclear testing
which represent a radiological or physical hazard to the native population, anc
removal of vegetation overgrowth inhibiting the development of agriculture.

EXECUTION
a.

Concept of Operation

JTG 8.8 will move to Bikini in two main echelons. Initial echelon will
arrive at Bikini on 18 February aboard USS Belle Grove. Second echelon will
