Improved methods for separating and preserving blood of interest in atomic energy research will be. sought in a program tered by the American National Red Cross under a contract with tie Energy Commission. qbmponents adminis- ~ Atomic The primary interest of theAEC in blood fractionation st¥dies is the development of means for separation and preservation of whit¢@ blood cells and platelets, which are two blood components of particulaf value in combating acute radiation effects. ‘In its initial studies under the contract, however, the Rd Cross will administer engineering development of new and quicker methofis for obtaining and preserving plasma and red blood cells. In connection with civil defense planning there is an acwte need for development of facilities that can separate quickly large qiJantities of blood fractions so that stockpilesof blood constituents wil]J be available in the event of atomic disaster. None of the AEC funde will be used to finance central ovgrhead or operating expenses of the Red Cross National Blood Program, norfdoes the contract provide for establishing blood banks. At the request of the National Security Resources Board ,f the Atomic Energy Project at the University of Rochester is planning to: put on a top level training course for 75 nurses:in the “Nursing Adpects of Atomic Warfare."
