capability of telecon between Parry Island and Los Alamos, New Mexico,
By utilizing re-encryption off-line and a TWX circuit, this second tclecon
capability was extended to Livermore, Calif. These circuits, which were
cleared for Top Secret RD, proved especially useful during the months of
April and May, 1956, and relieved an overloaded unclassified telephone net.
*Operation Redwing again pointed out the need for increasing the tele-
phone plant at Farry Island. The presently installed 270-line manual switchbourd is entirely inadequate to meet the needs of JTF 7. Que hundred and
tvclve main Hines were allocated this task group at Parr, Island. In order
to meet cequiremcuts of users, it was necessary to assign as many as five
extersions on numerous main Hines. The Parry Island-Los Alamos unclassified telephone circuit voice quality was so pdéor that it reccived a!most no
use during the operation,
It Ceveloped that radio silence was required in the Eniwetok Atoll area
on all frequencies below 200 Me, in order that certain scientifie projects
eomld he porformed, The J-5 Section of Headquarters JIF 7 provided exeelient service in locating and, by judicious reallecation of frequencies,
clostneting objectionable interference. EG&G periormed a study. of fregicneies in the 150 to 160 Me band and, as a result of dis study, submitted
yecuummnended frequencies for TG 7.1 scientific voice nets. It is interesting
to mute that mutual interference hetween frequencies in this band was noncriliom. Although meny more frequencies were used during Redwing than
in j.evieug operations, radio interference showed a marked decline.
There were made available to TG 7.1 for Operation Redwing two of
the Istest type ciphony equipment held by the National Security Agency,
narcly the AFSAY D-S06-A and D-808-A. Owing to poor voice quality of
* the D-806-A, this cquipment was used for approximately 57 min during a
&wo--month period. As a result, the D-806-A was released by TG 7.1 on

The D-S08-A, a laboratory model, proved a most acceptable

wnit, During the last week of May and first week of June, tests were concucted which proved that the D-SO8-A could be used with the VHF interatol!
tele;hone and teletype circuit without sacrifice of channels in use.
The
)-S08-A net was then cheuged to provide sets at Parry Island, Enyu Island,
ard VSS Estes. Remotes were installed at ground stations and cventually
27ll three locations were netted. This circuit proved most reliable, and providld a clear net, secured for Secret RD, 30 cssential to operations of this
